  • Stalin determined modernise soviet industry quickly – targets 5 year plan
  • 5 year plan rapid growth heavy industry employment to women
  • NEP abandoned 5 year plan introduced state planning authority
  • Success work cost. Workers poor working / living conditions
  • 5 year plan targets heavy industry coal steel light industry electrical, rubber
  • Stalin concerned Soviet Union, invaded- Germany for gun and heavy industrial  
  • 5 year plan 1938 abandoned 1941, Germany invaded

  • Increase urban population
  • Industrial centres based remote areas = safe – foreign attacks
  • These centres grew from nothing.
  • Skilled work force emerged = greater education
  • Previous workers – unskilled drunk women encouraged join work force
  • Children free education & healthcare
  • Target 5 year plan – too ambitious
  • Consumer goods shortages
  • Quality – problem. Produced lots of products but bad quality = tractors broke.

  • Alexei stakhonov – Soviet Union dug 102 tonnes coal 1 shift 15x average amount
