Tsarist Russia

  • 1894: Nicholas II crowned as Tsar
  • January 1905: Bloody Sunday, leading to revolution, showing unpopularity of Tsar
  • October 1905: Tsar issued October Manifesto, including a Duma
  • 1906: Stolypin appointed as Prime Minister - famous for 'carrot and stick' approach
  • 1914: Russia joined WWI - no match for Germany
  • 1916: Tsar extremely unpopular, much economic and social discontent 
  • 1917: The Tsar abdicated after several strikes and protests

Bolshevik Rule

  • 'Peace, land and bread' and 'All Power to the Soviets' - Lenin's slogans
  • 'July Days': Bolshevik-led revolution turned into a rebellion -  crushed by evidence showing Lenin was helped by Germans
  • September 1917: Kornilov attempted govenment take over - FAIL
  • October/November 1917: Revolution! Lenin's Bolsheviks in power now
  • January 1918: Formation of the Red Army
  • March 1918: Treaty of Brest-Litovsk - peace treaty between Russia and Germany
  • 1918-1921: Civil war - Reds vs Whites
  • 1918-1924: War Communism 
  • February 1921: Krondstadt Rising - 60,000 troops sent to stop the sailors
  • March 1921: NEP introduced - step back from communism
  • January 1924: Lenin's Death

USSR

  • 1929: Stalin undisputed leader
  • 1929: Start of collectivisation (led to famine from 1932-33)
  • 1934: Stalin purges the communist party
  • 1936-38: Great Terror - 18 million in camps, 10 million dead
  • 1928-32: First 5 Year Plan - staggering achievements, but not all goals met
  • 1933-37: Second 5 Year Plan - mining for lead, tin, zinc and other materials increased    
  • 1938: Start of third 5 Year Plan, interrupted by WWII
  • 1941: 2 million German troops invaded Russia
  • 1943: German army surrendered to Russia in Stalingrad
  • 1945: End of WWII, 20 million dead
