Elderly and Death

Christianity

Respect your father and mother (Fifth commandment)

The lord gave life, and now he has taken it way

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life

Thou shalt not kill

Buddism

I will not harm any living thing (The first precept)

We may carry our mothers on one shoulder and our fathers on the other and attend to them even for a hundred years... still thefavour we have received from our parents will be far from requited

If one speaks or acts with a wicked mind, unhappiness follows

Teachings of metta (loving kindness) and karuna (compassion)

Drug Abuse

Christianity

Your body is a temple of the holy spirit

Do not get drunk on wine, which will ruin you, but instead be filled with the Holy Spirit

Eucharist/ Holy Communion they drink wine 

Drug abuse is the new slavery

Buddhism

I will not take drugs or drink that cloud the mind (Fifth precept)

Right mindfulness (being aware of your actions, words and thoughts at all times) and right contemplation (learning to meditate without losing concentration) - Stages of The Eightfold Path

The root of dukkha (suffering) is craving and to reach Nirvanna this has to be stopped.

Right action (do not hurt others or yourself ) builds good karma

Crime and Punishment

Christianity

An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth

Never avenge yourself. Leave that to God. Don't let evil get the best of you, but conquer evil by doing good

If your brother sins, rebuke him, and if he repents, forgive him

Everyone must obey the state authorities because no authority exists without God's pemission

Buddhism

I abstain from taking life (Firth precept)

The cycle of samsara is effected by karma

Teachings of metta (loving and kindess) and karuna (compassion)

Rich and Poor in British society

Christianity

Our love should not jsut be words and talk; it must be in action

Love of money is the root of all evil

No-one can serve two masters... you cannot serve both God and Money

It is much harder for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven than for a camel to go through the eye of a needle.

Buddhism

The Middle Way

Right livelihood (money should be earned honestly and through hard work) - Eightfold Path

Craving/desire prevents enlightenment

Four noble truths: leads to greed and selfishness which causes suffering
