Abortion and Islam-main beliefs

- Regard abortion as wrong and Haram (forbidden)

- All schools of Muslim permit abortion to save the mothers life

- Islam forbides abortion after the soul 'Ruh' is 'breathed in'

  • A relevant hadith suggests the moment of ensoulment is 120 days.

Quote: Allah's apostle the true and truely inspired says - "(as regards to your creation) everyone of you is collected in the womb of his mother for the first 40 days, then he becomes a clot for another 40 days and then a piece of flesh for anoher 40 days. Then Allah sends an angel to write 4 words.The rights his deeds, the time of his death, means of his livelihood and whether he will be wretched or blessed (in religion). Then the soul is breathed into his body.

Abortion and Islam-providing for the child

- In the Qu'ran it is clear that you shouldnt abort a baby in fear that you wont be able to provide for it

- You should trust that Allah will look after you an your child

-Aborting a baby for fear of not being able to provide for it is seen as murder.

- Quote - "Kill not your off spring for fear of poverty, it is we who provide for them and for you. Surely killing it is a grea sin." Qu"ran 17:32

- Permissable if the child will have a defect that will cause great suffering and can't be cured.

- Many scholars would say it's permissable in the first 120 days.

Abortion and Islam-Incest,adultery and abuse

-Some scholars say it is permissable to abort if the mother was a victim of        or incest providing it is within 120 days of conception.

- Some scholars however say it is never permissable.

A quote to show it is never permissable: "I believe that the value of life is the same whether the embryo is a result of fornication with relatives or non-relatives or valid marriage.In shana life has the same value in all cases. Sheikh M.A Al-Salami, third symposuim in medical Jarisprudence.

- Each life is as important as the next 

- They believe if one life is taken by someone other than Allah then it is as if every life has been taken.

Quote: "Whosoever has spared the life of a soul, it is as though he has spared the life of all people.Whosoever has killed a soul it is thought he has murdered all of mankind. Qu'ran 5:32

- The catholic church take an absolute stance against abortion.

- Permit abortion under certain circumstances.

- See at as the less evil alternative in certain grave circumstances.

Main reasons for abortion

-Women have the right to decide what happens to her body.

- If the pregnancy will put the mother at risk or will pospone life saving treatment such as chemotherapy for the mother

- If abortion was banned they would still happen however they wouldn't be conducted in a safe way.Woman need protecting

- Some foetuses are so damaged it would be cruel to bring them into the world.

- To preserve the mental/spiritual/emotional health of a woman.

Main reasons against abortion

- God created life and we have no right to destroy it.

- Abortion is the murder of another human.

- All life is sacred and must be protected.

-When a foetus will be born with dsabilities we have no way of telling how it will impact their quality of lives so we shouldn't forbid that life.
