Melody

  • yearning, arch-shaped and long,
  • mellismatic and chromatic (highly elaborate and lyrical),
  • a variety of stepwise and angular movements,
  • very expressive,
  • sometimes irregular and extended.

Texture

  • mostly homophonic but could all be contrapuntal,
  • extended use of techniques, (e.g. varied use of dynamics, pedalling, use of entire piano range),
  • could be chordal, or arpeggiated. contrasting thick and light textures (using extreme ends of the piano range),
  • varied textures,
  • melody is not necessarily in the right hand, could be shared by both hands.

Harmony

  • mostly diatonic but explores dissonances (use of suspended harmonies),
  • chromatic, non-related harmonies, pitches. use of enharmonic notes.
  • ambiguous chords, (e.g. diminished),
  • tritonally juxtaposed chords (e.g. C major and E major),
  • use of unrelated chords, modulations to unrelated keys.

Rhythm

  • use of tempo rubato (stretching time),
  • complex rhythms, use of tuplets, rests and fragmentation,
  • frequent changes in both tempo and time signatures,
  • not strict in time.

  • programmatic.
