African American Background
African American Spirituals and traditional music was used alot in modern dance, for example Kathrine Dunham an African American who had majored the study of Human Kind at the University of Chicago. She went to study real forms of african and caribean in halti and jamaica in 1935, Thne later went on to start up her own company. She focused mainly on showing the positive cultural contributions and to rejuvenate notions of blackness. Kathrine created the move 'unjulations'.
The 1950's and 60's were times where political and social unheaval were present they saw the demand for greater racial inclusion and the rise of civil rights movement. African american leaders such as Martin Luther King for example protested for equality and performed a youth march in the white house in 1958 to protest against the segregated school systems.
