Respiration

Respiration is not 'breathing in and out':

  • Respiration is the process of transferring energy from glucose.
  • It is exothermic.
  • EXAMPLES of how organisms use the transferred energy:
    • 1. Proteins from amino acids (build up larger molecules from small ones)
    • 2. Allow muscles to contract (in animals)

Aerobic respiration:

  • Aerobic respiration uses oxygen:
    • glucose + oxygen -----> carbon dioxide + water
  • Anaerobic respiration is without oxygen:
    • glucose -----> lactic acid
  • Anaerobic respiration in plants + yeast:
    • glucose -----> ethanol + carbon
