Respiration is not 'breathing in and out':
- Respiration is the process of transferring energy from glucose.
- It is exothermic.
- EXAMPLES of how organisms use the transferred energy:
- 1. Proteins from amino acids (build up larger molecules from small ones)
- 2. Allow muscles to contract (in animals)
Aerobic respiration:
- Aerobic respiration uses oxygen:
- glucose + oxygen -----> carbon dioxide + water
- Anaerobic respiration is without oxygen:
- glucose -----> lactic acid
- Anaerobic respiration in plants + yeast:
- glucose -----> ethanol + carbon
