Respiration

  • is not breathing in and out
  • involves many reactions all of which are catalysed by enzymes
  • releases energy that cells need
  • releasing energy from the breakdown of glucose
  • aerobic respiration is respiration using oxygen
  • aerobic respiration goes on all the time in plants and animals
  • most of the reactions for aerobic respiration happen inside mitochondria
  • GLOCOSE + OXYGEN --> CARBON DIOXIDE + WATER + ENGERY

Respiration in exercise

  • increases the heart rate
  • some glucose from food is stored as glycogen
  • anaerobic respiration is without oxygen
  • GLUCOSE ---> ENERGY + LACTIC ACIDS (the incomplete breakdown of glucose)
  • lactic acids build up and is painful
