Social support

The resistor doesn’t have to give the correct answer but simply the fact that they don’t follow the majority is enough.

Asch ~ When unanimity was broken, conformity dropped to 5%

Conformity: Allen and Levine found that conformity increased when there was a disaster in an Asch type study. Even wearing thick glasses increased the likelihood of a participant resisting.

Obedience: In 29/33 groups of participants rebelled, this shows that peer support is linked to greater resistance.

When Milgram Ps saw a disobedient confederate, obedience dropped to 10%

Locus of control

Internal ~ belief in full control over self.

External ~ belief in control of other factors.

When Milgram’s study was repeated, Holland measured if participants were internal or external.

65% went to the highest volt but 37% of internals didn’t continue to the highest shock.

77% of externals fully obeyed.

Weakness: explanation is challenged by research.

Internals are less likely to experience the agentic state and are more likely to stay autonomous.
