CHRISTIAN VIEWS ON WAR

  • Christians are generally against war
  • War MAY be a neccesary evil in some circumstances
  • Some Christians, eg, Quakers, are totally opposed to fighting and during warfare they are conscientious objectors (taking a public stance against conflict). ----> They are prepared to go into battle driving ambulances or doing other duties BUT they will not fight.
  • Other Christians are prepared to fight in the armed services and there are always chaplains attached to military units.

  • Most Christians today would probably not condone any war that was not fought according to the ‘Just War’ theory

WHAT THE BIBLE SAYS

  • "thou shall not murder" (however there are occasions when Jews were told by God to attack people who oppose them) ----> "but if there is serious injury, you are to take life for life"
  • Jesus is descibed as a pacifist
  • When Jesus was arrested, his deciples wanted to defend him, he told them not to.
  • HOWEVER, there are two occasions in the bible that show Jesus' anger. 1. when people are using the temple as a place to buy and sell. 2. he was hungry, went up to a fig tree and there was nothing on it, so he said, may you never bear fruit again!
