Nature and purpose of suffering- Christianity

  • Suffering has entered the world as a result of;  1) free will being given to humanity.  2) the 'original' choice to be selfish or do wrong. 3) human nature not being perfect.
  • Suffering also results from; 1) 'moral' evil: where people choose to do wrong.        2) 'natural' evil: natural events that lead to suffering. 3) a finite world: where there are limits.
  • Suffering can; 1) lead to good things. 2) help develop a person's character.        3) Lead to inner strength and ability to overcome suffering and succeed. 4) Be a way of participating in the saving work of Jesus.
  • Those suffering should be helped and supported; this is in keeping with the Gospel tradition.
