Should Men & Woman be treated Equally?

Examples of Sexism:

  • Women likely to earn £300,000 less than men over their working lives
  • Domestic abuse against men is often ignored
  • Female winner of Wimbeldon receives same prize money as male winner, despite playing fewer games.

Christians- Men & Woman are all equally loved by God and have the same dignity, but they are each different, so play different roles in life- that has to be understood

Others- Men & Woman are equal, they should be traeted the same despite their differences,as we all are humans at the end of the day. However, you could argue that Equity is better.

This is because a woman gives birth, therefore it is essential that she needs time to recover(maternity leave), which is not neccessary for men because they are not giving birth.

Is the Catholic Church Sexist?

Why its sexist:

  • Jesus only chose men to be his disciples
  • The disciples only chose men to carry on their work
  • If everyone is equal in the eyes of God, then gender is not important
  • Women have the same ability as men to be a priest-so why is gender important?
  • God created all humans in his likeness, therefore everyone is special and has the chance to become a priest

Why its not:

  • Taught that men & woman for 2000 years are equal in eyes of God
  • Men & Women have equal dignity in eyes of God-despite having different roles
  • Jesus went against the culture at the time by including Mary Magdalene/other women as his close associates
  • The greatest in Heaven are the saints not the ministers.Heaven is our ultimate goal not being priests. Anyone can become a saint!
  • God create dyou in his own likeness, you were created specifically for a mission on Earth & that is unchangeable!

Family- Continued

  • Nuclear Family- Less common
  • More same sex, single parent, reconsitiuted families arising

Issues with changing family types...

  • Children in non-nuclear families likely to perform worse than children in nuclear families
  • With reconstituted families(step families), children likely to suffer difficult effects, which can impact their social/physical health
  • With same-sex parenthood the kids only receive one type of love, they would not receive the other gender's love

Christian Family...

"Is the first community called to announce the gospel to the human person, during growth & bring him/her, through christian maturity + progressive education."  -Familiaris Consortio 1

Parents bring kids up in Christian faith by Baptism.

Family

Catholic Church say...

  • Both mum & dad should bring up kids well + give them security/stability
  • Importance of mothers role in looking after home + kids, doesn't mean they don't have other function in life or that dad shoukdn't help either
  • More recoginition should be given by society the difficulties surrounding the role

Men & Woman are both v.important- "There is neither Jew nor Greek, male or female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus."   - Galatians 3:28

4 tasks for Families- according to Catholics:

  • Form a community
  • Support life/personal development of each individual
  • Share in the development of the wider society
  • Share in the life + mission of the church

What does society say about sex?

Sex during Marriage- Everyone encourages sex in marriage because it shows the love between the husband and wife.

Adultery- Catholics and other Christians it's not acceptable becasue you're breaking the 6th commandment & not being faithful to your partner, however, others may argue that it is fine because it is your body and you can do what you want to do with it.

Homosexuality- According to all Christians having gay thoughts/feelings is fine since you can't control them, however, one can stop their actions. So, you can't have sex with same sex or get married - since you're not producing kids. espite this, The Anglicans accepyt civil partnerships just not in the church(it dosen't bother them) . However, others say that everyone should have the right to marry and have a sexual relationship with whom they love- a basic right!!!

Is Divorce ever acceptable?

When you legally end a marriage.

Should happen...

  • When the partner commits adultery
  • If the partner is abusive/violent, your life is at risk
  • If it is the last resort/possible solution
  • If it is the most loving thing to do

Shouldn't happen...

  • If you haven't tried other solutions
  • If you have promised God, you'll be togethr till one of you die
  • If you have children
  • You are unhappy with each other over silly issues
  • Jesus taught anyone who divorced and then marries another, commits adultery
  • God made man & woman to be united as one- no humand has ability to break that bond

Catholic View on Contraception

  • Catholics think every act of sex should be unitive and procreative- these two can't be separated
  • Artifical Contraception is wrong because the two people are separated, not fully self giving
  • Not open to the chance of having children

Consequences of Contraception:

Pope John Paul says Artifical Contraception...

  • Removes link between sex & conception, so people more likely to see people as an object
  • Increases promiscuity, people do not have any consequences for their actions-lowers moral standards
  • Corrupt government could force contraception

Cohabitaton

a couple living together & having a sexual relationship, without being married to one another.

Why its good...

  • helps couples decide if they want to get married
  • you get to know the person more and develop a more intimate bond with them

Why its bad (according to the Catholic Church)...

  • you're commiting adultery
  • breaks sacrament of marriage + sexual union
  • removing the sense of commitment from sexual union
  • without this commitment, the couple might not feel as to make effort to ensure relationship lasts, destroying sense of faithfulness
  • the relationship may end at any point-with potiental difficult effects on kids
