Double Glazing Windows

  • Reduced air contact - warm and cold air is separated
  • Reduced heat conduction and convection
  • Low conductivity gas e.g. argon is used in between the two sheets of glass
  • An optimal gap size of 16mm
  • Lower temperature gradient

Heat Exchangers

  • Warm stale gas/liquid moves along pipes
  • Countercurrent flow of fresh cold gas/liquid
  • Heat is tranfered from the stale gas/liquid to the fresh gas/liquid
  • Pipes are long - large surface area
  • Pipes have thin walls and are made of good thermal conductor e.g. copper
  • Chamber is insulated to reduce outwards heat loss
  • Cold stale gas/liquid is discharged
  • Fresh warm gas/liquid is used
