Reducing Unwanted Heat Transfers

?

Lubrication

  • Lubricants can be used to reduce the friction between the objects surfaces when they move.
  • They are usually be liquids eg oil so they flow easily between objects and coat them.

Thermal Conductivity

  • This is the measure of how quickly energy is transferred through a material.
  • Materials with a high thermal conductivity transfer energy between their particles at a faster rate.
  • Conduction-transfer of energy between the particles' kinetic energy stores.
  • Convection- particles moving from hotter to cooler regions.

Insulation

  • Houses have cavity walls which have an inner and outer wall. The air gap reduces the amount of energy transferred by conduction.
  • The foam in the wall reduces the amount of convection.
  • Loft Insulation can reduce convection currents9where the air particles are constantly being heated rising cooling sinking)
  • Double glazed windows prevent energy transfer by conduction through the windows.
  • Draught excluders around doors and windows reduce enrgy transfers by convection.
