Religious upbringing and experiences

Upbringing:

  • Baptised, promise to belive in God and be a good Christain
  • Taught to pray, worship in church, wouldnt waste time praying to nothing
  • Attend church school where everybody believes
  • Natural to believe parents and teachers

Experiences:

  • Direct contact must exist
  • Numinous, conversion and miracles could only be from God
  • Has to be someone to answer the prayers, only God

Design and causation arg:uments

Design:

  • Each design has to have a designer, only God
  • Couldn't happen by chance, to complet eg. watch
  • Shouldnt have designed bad

Causation:

  • one thing causes another (each cause has an effect)
  • God caused universe, humans etc , could only be him.

Scienctific view:

  • Big Band & universe still expanding, evidence for evolution
  • No longer need God as an explanation

Religous responce to science:

  • God made Big Band timing, laws of gravit and gases react
  • Main points in Bible fit with science, eg. Apparent age theory, 7 days would be billions of years.

Unanswered prayers:

How it can lead to agnostic/atheist:

  • No one to listen
  • Would help if he exists

Religious response:

  • Answers, but not in the way you would expect
  • Learn from selfish thoughts
  • have to fit in with his overall plan, ill to enter heaven
  • Need not want

Evil and Suffering

How it can lead to agnostic/atheist:

  • All powerful, could remove it
  • All loving, want to remove it
  • omniscience, knew it would happen
  • Cant exist otherwise don't have these features

How christians respond:

  • Interpret the Bible differently
  • Response 1: would have a reason that humans cant understand, follow Jesus teaching to fight against it to help others.
  • Respose 2: Humans cause it by misusing free will.
  • Response 3: Not a problems as it prepares you for paradise, by improving sould to face evil you become a better person he shows features by using heaven as a reward.
