Rag Bhairav

?

Structure and Melody

ALAP: the introductory section where the pitch sa or C is established.

The piece then moves on to a mukhra, a short melodic phrase that marks out the different phases of improvisation.

Between stave 6 and 13 the notes are embellished with:

Sruti: microtonal inflections

Gamak: wide vibrato around notes

Meends: slides between notes

On staves 14 and 15 the piece uses scale like figures called tans, which represent the JHOR

The JHALA is signified by the entry of the tabla to provide rhyhtmic intensity. The mukhra  is used at the opening of the Jhala, with the opening pitches of the rag at stave 21.

The sam (X) at bar 23 marks the development of the jhala opening notes and a series of tans occur at stave 25. Stave 35 is decorated and concluded to finish the rag
