Hess 1963- Pupil dilation

Aim: To see the effect of pupil dilation on emotion

Method: pps were shown two sets of photographs of eyes. In one set the pupils had been enlarged. In the other set of photos the pupils had been reduced

Q: What do you thik the pps preferred enlarged pupils or not dilated pupils

Results: Showed that pps preferred the photos of eyes with the enlarged upil, mainly because they found them more attractive.. they couldnt explain why they thought this

Conclusion: Pupil dilation has a unconious but owerful effect on emotion

Evaluation: - Lab study, lacks ecological validity because in everyday life you would not do this

+ Lab study so you know the results are accurate

- As it is done by photographs they might not seem as realistic
