Classical Conditioning - Watson and Rayner

Aim- to see if a fear response could be conditioned into a person

Method- 11 month old Albert liked white labatory rats and nad no fear of furry white objects. Everytime he reached for the rat a matal bar was hit with a hammer behind him.

Results- after 7 times when the rat was presented Albert screamed and tried to get away, even though the metal bar was not being hit. he also screamed when shown other furry white things like a fur coat.

Conclusion- fear repsonses can be learnt using classical conditioning

evaluation: unethical- a child was caused distress, only one child used so cannot be generalised to the wider population.

practical applications of classical conditioning: advertisers can built positive association between adverts and products to make us buy their products.
