What does it do?

Controls data traffic on the internet

  • TCP splits data into packets
  • IP send packets to correct address
  • TCP re-assembles packets and check if any missing to request re-sending

  • User Datagram Protocol

What does it do?

Alternative to TCP/IP

  • It doesnt check for missing packets

HTTP

Full Name

  • Hyper Text Transfer Protocol

What do they do?

Controls transmission of webpages

  • Starts with 'request' in browser
  • Then gets 'response' from web server
  • Fianlly, displays webpage in browser

SMTP

Simple Mail Transfer Protocol

What does it do?

Controls sending emails

  • It pushes messages to email servers
  • Servers 'store and forward' emails

POP

Full name:

Post Office Protocol

What does it do?

Controls recieving email

  • It pulls messages from email servers
  • Downloads them to user's device

File Transfer Protocol

What does it do?

Controls transfer of files

  • Special FTP software allows users to upload and download from servers

SNMP

Full name;

Simple Network Mangement Protocol

What do they do?

Checks devices on a network

  • Used by IT technicians for network management
  • Gives IT them lots of commands to check problems e.g. dodgy printer

ICMP

Full name:

Internet Control Message Protocol

What do they do?

Checks packet delievery on a network

  • Used by devices such as routers to send error messages when packets cannot be delivered.
