PROTEST AND PERSONAL FREEDOM - Student protest

KEY PROTESTS - Stop the Draft Week = 100,00 attented the march shouting "hell no" high on drugs. Columbia University Protests = 1000 students seizing five uni buildings covered walls with Malcom X and Karl Marx. 

SUCCESSES - Played an important role in dismantling Jim Crow Laws, relaxation of controls on free speech and political activism at unis, anti-war unis helped persuade Johnson to halt and Nixon to end, improved quality of American life, teach-ins gained movement respectability, widespread protest.

FAILURES - Proved very ineffective, promoted violence, offered little that was constructive, little media support, violence, oppotistion to materialism = ineffective.

KEY FEATURES - Fashion, drug using and move to bands like rolling stones who advocated drug use. "flower power" movement.

WOODSTOCK - 400,000 people attented "make love not war" Hendrix's national anthem performance contreversial for anti-war underlyign message. 

DEVELOPMENTS - Haight-Ashbury = group of hippies move here smoked and sold cannibis 100,000 hippies visited "hashbury". "Human Be-In" = 1000 young people celebrated personal freedom, communal living and enviromentalism. Summer of Love = attracted 10,000. The Diggers = Dec 1966 paraded a coffin "death of money" organised free music concerts, gave free food, medical care and transport.

SIGNIFICANCE - Time Magazine estimated 300,000 hippies

TACTICS - Legislation = represented Weel's in courtcase, Political Pressure = produced bill of rights, Public info campaigns = flight attendents, Protests = 1970 national campaign strike for equality. 

SUCCESSES - Executive Order 11375 = Johnson signed outlawing sexual discrimination that work for gov, promised to appoint 50 women to top gov posts. Weeks vs Southern Bell = took southern bell telephone comapny to court for promoting a man. Weeks got job and $31,000 dollars. Criminl Law = Muncy Act, Jane Daniel convicted of robbery and recieved much lower sentence then her conterpart, woman should recieve longer sentences than men.

PROTEST AND PERSONAL FREEDOM - Radical Feminists

SUCCESSES - 1967 established "VWL" newspaper due to National Conference of New Politics not inluding woman. Conciousness raising = held in colleges and in community, awareness increased. 1974 2/3 of women polled to say they were discriminated. 

OTHER KEY ORGANISATIONS - New York Feminists = raised meetings, Feminists in NYC = T.I Grace Attinson sexual revolution benefitted men. New York Radical Women = held consiousness raising 

LIMITATIONS AND DISUNITY - Never led to passing of equal rights ammendment, disagreements over tactics and issues, Breakaway groups e.g Radicalesbians resented lack of support for the NOW.
