Power Distance

Power Distance

Refers to how different cultures deal with the Inequality that is present in all societies (Hofstede 2003). Hofstede (1980) classified cultures as either high or low on the power distance index.

Example: Workers from high power cultures such as phillipines (taught not to question) would not question or speak up if they didn't understand out of fear.

High power distance is associated with hierachical organisations with a strict command and control structure. Low power distance tends to lead to flatter organsations with authority distrubuted to many indiviudals.

High power - leaders dont ask for opinions and subordinates very rarely challenge.

Low Power - leaders carefully communicate their plans to seek acceptance and engagement from group. People feel relatively free to challenege the strategy of leadership.
