Mali- impact of global governance

Stability:

Not as dependent on imports, water aid, improved relations between North and Soth

Growth:

GNI increased from $505/capita to $2040/capita, 2015 peace deal between gov. and Tuareg

Development:

World bank created supply chains for farmers, police helped set up elections, imporoved literacy rate helped by world education Mali

Inequality:

FGM, inequality in the South, Tuareg group feel they are treated unfairly

Injustices:

Terrorists bomb aid workers, only 1% of Tuareg have access to sewerage, life expectancy=55

South Sudan

Background:

The newest sovereign state- gained independence in 2011, lanlocked country, population= 12 million, wide spread poverty due to conflict

Interventions and interactions of organisations:

Intervention requires co operation of UN, IGAD and NGOs, UN peace building mission reinforced 2014- supports the government in peace consolidation

Since december 2013 military presence has increased- 12,500 military, 1,000 police to implement the cessation of hostilities agreement

Government treaties:

Convention against torture, african charter on human rights, elimination on discrimination of women

Ukraine

Background:

Lower middle income economy, GDP falling, contested politically throughout history- gained independence following the collapse of the soviet union in 1991

Challenges:

Internal political division due to the Russian speaking East and the Ukranian speaking West

Impacts on people:

1.47 million of the 5.2 million inhabitants of Lugansk and Donetsk oblasts are IDPs having fled their homes in 2014, evacuees living in summer camp dormatories, 7,000 deaths 13,900 injuries 

Impacts on places:

Donetsk airport is a scene of heavy fighting, Donbass has no power, water or gas
