position of African Americans and Native Americans

?

13, 14 and 15th ammendmants

In the period of 1865-1890, African Americans were granted these laws in the constitution that granted them more rights after they had been freed from slaverly.

the 13th ended slavery in 1865 and allowed African Americans freedom from their plantation owners.

the 14th granted them more civil rights than before and made sure they were not allowed to be abused on things such as public transport

the 15th said that they were not allowed to be denied the right to vote based on the colour of their skin or gender, however the south made loopholes around these laws by introducing literacy tests to deny them the vote

these laws were basically outlawed with the compromise of 1877 as reconstruction was deemed complete.

segregation

the jim crow laws 1877-1965 decreased rights for African Americans by replacing the black codes and made life difficult by seperating black and white people and not allowing them to vote.

black schools were also poorly equipped and often inferior to the white schools.

southern states introduced poll taxes, literacy tests and grandfather clauses

violence from groups such as the kkk were lynching African Americans and they were never prosecuted for their actions.

Position of Native Americans

due to westward expansion relations with Native Americans were often unfriendly and they resented the settlers.

Manifest destiny wanted to force Native Americans to become an "American" citizen and follow their ways of living in small families and working in the newer society.

they also wanted to convert them to christianity as they felt they were on a mission from God to convert the west to christianity.

Natives were often forced onto poor land that would often fail and be of poor quality, most sold their land, the dawes act also made it impossible for people to live in tribes and broke down the traditional lives of Native Americans.

Grant created the Bureau for indian affairs to try and protect the natives and their land.
