Population Growth

  • The worlds population is growing rapidly
  • For thousands of years the worlds population grew at a steady rate
  • In 1820 the worlds population reached 1 billion
  • In 1999 less than 200 years later, the worlds population totalled 6 billion
  • Since the 1960's. the worlds population has been growing at a rate of 1 billion every 15 years or so
  • This rapid rise in the worlds population has been called a 'poulation explosion'
  • There are three cause of population change:

Migration - the movement of peopel in and out of a country

Deaths - measured using the death rate which is the number of deaths per 1000 of the population

Births - measured using the birth rate which is the number of live births per 1000 of the population

  • The difference between the birth rate and the death rate of a country is called the rate of natural population increase
  • If the birth rate is higher than the death rate, then the total population will increase
  • If the death rate is higher than the birth rate, then the total population will decrease
  • Population growth rates are highest in LEDCs, where birth rates are high but death rates are beginning to fall. Death reates are falling due to the global improvements in health and medicine
