C- Courtly Popular-  2 Class System of upper and lower class via the feudal system

O-Occupational- Work become the basis of sport

W-Waggering- Both classes would participat in betting as 'rags to riches' and wanting to become rich by betting on the most unlikely win.

O-Occassional- Free time for recreation only happened on Holy days or annual holidays. An example of one of these sports is mob football

N-Natural/Simple- Lack of technology and money meant that there were no purpose built facilities.

C-Cruel/violoent- Reflects the harsh society of the 18th century rural life.

U-Unwritten Rules- Illiteracy was high and no formal NGB's had been formed and all the sports were played locally within villages.

R-Rural- Pre idustrial Britain revolution was agricultural and rural.

L-Local- All the games were played locally as there was limited transport which mean that towns and villages didnt communicate.

Skill and Health Effect in Pre idustrial Britain- There were other activites such as bare-fist fighting and other blood sports these were the sports that were for the lower class whereas the upper class played sports such as hunting, shooting and fishing. These in turn meant that particiaption increased as well as physical competence.

Opportunity,Provsion and Esteem

Class- Pre industrial britain was split into a 2 class scoiety this was the upper class which were also know as the Gentry/Aristocrasy/Courtly. The lower class which were known as the peasants the upper class dominated the lower class. The upper class had opportunity, provision and esteem as they had the money which brought them their purpose built facilities and equipment and transport. They also had the time which meant that they becme skillful and had social status which then increased their self worth and esteem.

Gender- The freedom of opportunity is linked with class. The upper class women were free to participate in elilist pastimes such as Hawking and Tennis. Whereas the lower class women are free to participate in less sophisticated games such as smock racing this is were the women would race from one end of the village to the other in there smocks(dress) this often actracted waggering and betting on which women was going to win.
