Causes of Industrial Pollution 0.0 / 5 ? GeographyResources and the environmentGCSENone Created by: Francesca2408Created on: 07-01-17 16:29 Air Pollution Carbon Dioxide is produced by power stations, factories and road vehicles etc. which use fossil fuels. Burning fossil fuels can cause acid rain. This kills trees and fish. Also causes Climate Change. This leads to Global Warming. The Smoke cause breathing problems for us. 1 of 8 Water Pollution Waste materials from factories can escape into rivers and lakes. Power stations use water for cooling. If this warm water is returned into the lakes as warm water it can kill fish. At sea oil tankers spill it causes the wildlife to die. 2 of 8 Visual Pollution Few factories look attractive. Large industries like oil refining and steelworks take up large amounts of land. Some dump their waste material which is unsightly, dangerous, poisonous and even radioactive. When factories close, the land may be left derelict(empty). 3 of 8 Environmental Pollution By using large ares of land, industry can destroy vegetation and wildlife habitats. Quarries in National Parks and oil refineries and power stations on attractive coastlines can spoil the scenery. 4 of 8 Smell Pollution Some industries such as: plastics chemicals woodchips give off very unpleasant smells. 5 of 8 Noise Pollution Lorries going to and from factories Heavy machinery within factories Deliberate explosions in quarries All create noise for poeple living nearby. 6 of 8 How can we reduce Industrial Pollution? 1st Way. By Education: As more people become aware of the dangers of pollution, more pressure can be put on industry and governments to prevent further pollution. Results have been more encouraging but it's impossible to solve all problems at once. Likewise, it's impossible to clean up pollution overnight. 7 of 8 How can we reduce Industrial Pollution? 2nd Way. Spend more money on preventing pollution: Not all governements or industries have the money/desire to spend what little money they have on preventing pollution. Factories/Power Stations producing energy can reduce the amount of smoke/gases. Which means a drop in profits. 8 of 8
