Laissez-Faire

  • believed the government should interfere as little as possible in the everyday lives of the people
  • the job of the president was to leave businessmen alone to do their jobs

Tariffs

  • republicans believed in import tariffs which made it expensive to import foreign goods
  • in 1922, Harding introduced the Fordney-McCumber tariff which made imported food expensive in the USA
  • these protected businesses against foreign competition
  • began closing it's borders to foreign immigrants

Low taxation

  • taxes were lowered as much as possible
  • bought benefits for working class people, but more to the wealthy

Trusts

  • huge super corporations which dominated industries
  • allowed the trusts to do what they wanted
