Poetry: Power and Conflict - NATURE

?

Storm on the island

"The wizened earth had never troubled us with hay"

"nor are there trees which might prove company"

"listen to the thing you fear

Forgetting that it pummels your house too"

"Exploding comfortably down on the cliffs"

"Flung spray...spits like a tame cat turned savage"

"space is a salvo. We are bombarded by the empty air"

"Strange, it is a huge nothing we fear."

Extract from: The Prelude

"I found a little boat tied to a willow tree"

"Small circles glittering idly in the moon"

"The horizons bound... with purpose of its own"

"with trembling oars I turned"

"No pleasant images of trees, of sea or sky... but the huge and mighty forms"

Exposure

"Our brains ache, in the merciless iced east winds that knive us"

"silence, sentries whisper, curious, nervous"

"Dawn... her melancholy army attacks once more"

"But nothing happens/ Is it that we are dying?"

"Frost will fasten on this mud and us, shrivelling away many hands and puckering foreheads crisp"

"All their eyes are ice, but nothing happens."
