THE FLEA_JOHN DONNE

Conceit - extended elaborate metaphor - the flea mingling their blood = sex

Metaphysics - philosophy concering the first principles

JOHN DONNE = CONTEXTUALLY UNCONVENTIONAL - wrote about love, sex, and lust.

3 stanzas-

1. "MArk but this flea" - HE wants to have sex w/ her, she said no. He then complains that she has allowed the flea, to mingle their blood which basically is sex, so she should just let him have sex with her "how little that is which thou denys't me"

2. she dont gaf, gets ready to kill el flea. He's like 'yo!' and stops her, comparing the murder of the flea to sacrilege. "This our marriage bed and marriage temple is" elevating status of said flea, to a religious tier. blackmail? argues the flea also represents all three of them

3. my girl kills that mofo, boy is mildly distraught "purpled thy nail in the blood of innocence" - she didn't need to kill the flea. Whatever tho, he says, killing the flea has proved her fears wrong so she should STILL let him sleep with her .. JHeez

Metaphysical because Donne turns the most unexpected item into a representation of love and desire - the concept of the 2 arguing over premarital sex is amusing in itself.

We never hear the female persona speak, only watch her actions through descriptions from the male character. This empahasise the one sided nature of the desire, and the ridiculousness of the males pleas.

If they have mixed in the flea, it should be okay for them to have sex, because the intimacy in both actions is basically the same (right?) "this cannot be said a sin, nor shame, nor loss of maidenhood".

(Not so) SUNNY PRESTATYN_PHILLIP LARKIN

Social commentary on the use of SEX APPEAL in advertising

3 stanzas which show the progression of time, whilst a poster has been pasted.

Formal and informal language create bathos (Collapse in atmosphere due to switch from serious to trivial).

Model is beautiful and seemingly attainable, although we know the luxury she is offering is only in reach of a few individuals.

Dark comedy - Comedic tone is what prevents it from being a tragedy.

begins with a beautiful, desirable description of said poster girl, but she slowly evolves into a victim of vandalisation and becomes grotesque.

"kneeling on the sand in white tautened satin" An attractive description, White, represents innocence and purity - the ideas behind the holiday and the girl, used to draw people in. a sense of foreshadowing as readers can predict the fate of said innocent poster girl.

" seemed to expand from her thighs and spread breast lifting arms", crude, vulgar, grotesque language creates humour, but also brings attention to the fake natre of the advertisment.

" she was slapped one day in march" putting up the poster, but it sounds ruder and more careless as if she was placed without a second thought.

" snaggle toothed and boss eyed" "huge **** and fissured croth" "tuberous **** and balls" she has been vandalised only a few weeks after, and she has been essentially violated. the crude and violent decriptionsof her transformation, shocks and possibly disgusts readers. but the amusing and seemingly immature language is what keeps the peom in the realm of comedy.

The final stanza

"to stab right through the moustached lips of her smile"

"she was too good for this life"

" now fight cancer is there"

violent use of knife and 'stab' shows resent and tensions between classes and what the poster girl represents.

sad and hollow ending, shows the temporary state of beauty in society and the place for advertisment. also makes the previous poster seem ridiculous and stupid.
