animal cell

Animal cells contain:

  • cell membrane
    • controls the passage of substances in and out of the cell
  • nucleus
    • controls all the cell activity
    • contains the genetic material
  • cytoplasm
    • a liquid gel in with most of the chemical reactions for life take place
  • ribosomes
    • where proteins are synthesised
  • mitochondria
    • release energy during respiration

plant cell

Plant cells contain all the sub-cellular structures found in animal cells

They also have:

  • cell wall made of cellulose
    • strengthens the cell
  • a large, permanent vacuole
    • contains cell sap
    • gives support to the plant
  • chloroplasts
    • contain chlorophyll
      • absorb light to make food (glucose) by photosynthesis
