What are the responsibilities of being a parent?

You need to be able to meet all the child’s needs for food, shelter, love and security. Being a parent involves lots of sleepless nights-you need to know you’d be able to cope. Being a parent is a long-term responsibility and there are no days off. You’ve got to know that you’d be mature enough to deal with it.

What do people need to consider about their lifestyle?

Money is a huge factor as having kids and looking after them costs lots of money. They would have to think about whether they’d stay at home to look after their kids or go back to work and get childcare which is expensive. If they’ve got a career, then taking a break from it to look after their child might mean it’s tough to get a job when they want to go back to work. They’d have to give up some of their social life and hobbies if they have a baby and they may end up resenting the baby because of that. Their house or flat might be too small to take an extra person so they might have to move.

What do people need to consider about their family?

A stable relationship between the parents is important because babies need stability and love. If there are already children, they would have to think about how they will deal with a new baby as having another child could affect their relationship with the other children because they would spend less time with each child. They’d have to think about what support they will receive from relatives, for instance, they may baby sit or not. For some women with health problems it could be dangerous to get pregnant again.

What are the bad reasons to have a baby?

Having a baby to have someone to love or to have someone who will love you is a bad reason because babies are incredibly demanding therefore their needs for love will be insignificant to the baby’s need. Some people feel pressure from their families to have kids. There’s also peer pressure from friends. Having a baby to get extra benefit from the government is a bad idea because bringing up a baby on benefits is really hard as they are expensive. Women in their 30s may think that if they don’t have a baby now it will be too late. Having a baby to bring a couple closer together could end up tearing them apart.
