Moments
Forces can be used to turn objects about a pivot...turning effect of force = moment
- a spanner used to unscrew a nut would exert a moment on the nut (example of turning effect)
To increase the moment:
- increase size of force
- increase perpendicular distance between the force and the pivot (use a longer instrument
Moment (newton meters, Nm) = force (newtons, N) x perpendicular distance from pivot (meters, m)

- push = force applied by person = effort, when trying to lift objects (the load) around a pivot.
