Physics Textbook Questions: Changes in Energy Stores (pg 5)

?

Question 1 (4)

a) The gravitational potential energy is rapidly converted in the equal amount of kinetic energy.

b) The electricity is converted into an equal amount of output, most of which is heat, but there is some waste sound. The heat dissipates into the surrounding environment.

Question II (6)

1. A candle
2. A wind-up torch

The candle converts chemical energy from the wax into heat and light energy.
The torch converts elastic and kinetic energy from the winding into heat, light and sound energy.

The candle is easier to obtain energy from as there are less energy transfers and less wasted energies. However, the torch is easier to use as it is quicker to turn on and doesn't require a lighter.

Question III (4)

a) The electricity is constantly being converted into an equal output, most of which is kinetic energy, there is some waste sound and heat (friction).

b) As it breaks, the train is using kinetic energy in the breaks to press against the wheels and produce heat and light energy, as it glows red-hot. The friction caused between th breaks and the wheels and the tracks and the wheels slow it down to a stop, with some excess sound energy.

Question IV (2)

Electrical energy is transferred into microwaves which carry heat and some light energy. The veins glow red-hot as they are heated and the food heats up via the dissipation of the heat through the microwave.
