Changes in energy stores

Energy can be stored in many different ways. It is transferred by heating, waves, an electric current or when force moves an object...

  • Chemical energy stores - fuels, foods or the chemicals found in batteries - the energy is transferred  during chemical reactions
  • Kinetic energy stores describe the energy an object has because it is moving
  • Gravitational Potential energy stores - describe the energy stored in an object because of its position - an object above ground
  • Elastic potential energy stores - energy in a springy object when strech it or squash it
  • Thermal Energy stores - the energy a substance has because of its temperature

Energy can be transferred from one store to another. In a torch, the batteries push the current through the bulb therfore making the bulb emit light and it gets hot.

If an electric kettle is used to boil water, the current flows through the heating element and transfers energy into thermal energy store of the water and the kettle.

if an object is thrown into the air, it slows down as it goes up. the energy is transferred from the object's inetic energy store to its gravitational potential energy store.
