Physicians, Apothecaries and Surgeons - medieval medicine

Physicians

  • main role was diagnosing illnesses
  • rarely treated patients themselves
  • looked at samples of urine, feces and blood to diagnose
  • consulted astrology charts
  • uses the theory of the four humors
  • went to university for 7-10 years

Apothecaries

  • mixed herbal remidies
  • had knowlege of the healing power of herbs and plants 
  • knolege passed down through generations or gained via personal experiences

Surgeons

  • performed surgeries eg. blood letting, removing arrows, setting broken bonesetc.
  • performed dentistry eg. pulling teeth out etc.
  • would also remove cataracts - when the lens of the eye develops cloudy patchs, obscuring vision (usually happens in the elderly)
  • usually learnt from gained experience or university
