Photosynthesis, respiration and energy

Photosynthesis - 6CO2 + 6H20 + ENERGY = C6H1206 + 6O2

Respiration - C6H12O6 + 6O2 = 6CO2 + 6H20 + ENERGY

Aerobic respiration - respiration with oxygen

Anaerobic respiration - respiration without oxygen

ATP

Condensation reaction - When two smaller molecules are used to make a larger molecule.

Hydrolysis - When H2O is added to a molecule to split it into two smaller molecules.

ATP Synthase - An enzyme that catalyses the synthesis of ATP from ADP + Pi.

Phosphorylation - The process of adding a phosphate group to a molecule.

ATP Hydrolase - An enzyme that catalyses the hydrolysis of ATP into ADP + Pi.

Chloroplasts

Thylakoids - Fluid filled sacs where the light dependent reaction occurs

Grana - A structure of stacked thylakoids linked together by lamellae

Lamellae - Lamellae are bits of membrane which bind the grana

Photosynthetic Pigments - Coloured substances that absorb the light energy needed for photosynthesis.

Photosystem - A protein and pigment found in the thylakoid.

Stroma - A gel like substance that surrounds the thylakoid. Where the light indepent reaction occurs.

Light dependent reaction

Photoionisation - The process of turning an atom or a molecule into an ion using light energy.

Photophosphorylation - The process of adding a phosphate group to a molecule

Photolysis -  The splitting of a molecule using light energy.

Non-Cyclic Phosphorylation

Electron Carriers - Proteins that transfer electrons

Electron transport chain - A chain of proteins through which excited electrons flow.
