GROUP 1

  • Group 1 elements are reactive, soft metals (alkali metals)
  • The alkali metals are Lithium, Sodium, Potassium, Rubidium, Caesium and Francium
  • They all have one electron in their outer shell making them very reactive and gives them similar properties
  • The metals are soft with a low density
  • The trends for the alkali metals as you go down group 1 are: Increasing reactivity; the outer electron is more easily lost as the attraction between the nucleus and the electromn decreases so Francium is more reactive than Lithium, Lower melting and boiling points, and Higher relative atomic mass.
  • Alkali metals form iconic compounds with non-metals
  • Reaction with water produces hydrogen gas
  • Reaction with chlorine produces salt

GROUP 7

  • Group 7 elements are known as halogens
  • The halogens are all non-metals and are coloured vapours;
  • Flourine is very reactive, poisonous yellow gas
  • Chlorine is a fairly reactive, poisonous dense green gas
  • Bromine is a dense, poisonous, red-brown volatile liquid
  • Iodine is a dark gray crystalline solid or a purple vapour
  • The trends as you go down Group 7, the halogens; become less reactive- its harder to gain an extra electron because the outer shells furthur from the nucleus, have higher melting and boiling points, have higher realtive atomic masses
  • All the elements react in a similar way as they all have seven electrons in their outer shell
  • Halogens can form Molecular compounds
  • Halogens form Ionic bonds with metals
  • More reactive halogens will displace less reactive ones

GROUP 0

  • The Group 0 elements are known as noble gases
  • They are all Inert, Colourless gases
  • The elements include helium, neon, argon, Krypton, Xenon, Radon and Ununoctium
  • They all have 8 electrons in their outer shell apart from helium which has two.
  • Because they have 8 electrons in their outer shell they don't have to give up or gain electrons to become more stable
  • All the elemts are colourless at room temperature
  • They are not flammable
  • The trends in noble gases are; the boiling points of the noble gases increase as you move down the group along with increasing realtive atomic mass
