Perception
How we interpret or make sense of the sensory information that we recieve.
Sensation.
The information we recieve through our senses.
Binocular Depth Cue
A way of detecting depth or distance, which requires two eyes in order to work.
Depth Cue
A feature of an image which indicates distance.
Height in Plane
How high the object appears in the image.
Linear Perspective
When straight lines are arranged so they would come together at a point on the horizon.
Monocular Depth Cue
A way of detecting depth of distance, which will work with just one eye.
Relative Size
How large an object appears in an image.
Occlusion
When one object seems to cover part of another object.
Convergence
A form of depth perception which uses how the eye muscles focus on images.
Retinal Disparity
A form of depth perception which compares the images from two eyes, side by side.
Motion Parallax
The way that the visual field changes with movement, close objects move more than ones further away.
Inference
A conclusion reached on the basis of past experience or knowledge.
Misinterpreted Depth Cue
When a depth cue is used inappropriately.
Size Constancy
Way we keep our original perception of the object, even when information recieved by the eyes changes.

The idea our perception is built up from our prior knowledge and experience.
Stimulus
Something that is detected by the sense receptors, which the nervous system will react to.
Preceptual Set
A state of readiness to perceive certain kinds of stimuli rather than others.
Innate
Inborn or inherited - that is, not learnt.
Visual Illusion
A visual perception which is wrong or misinterprets what is actualy there in reality.
Fiction
The perception of an object or movement that is not present in the stimulus.
Nature
The idea that our characteristics and behaviour are inherited.
Ambiguity
Having more than one possible meaning or interpretation.
Nurture
The idea that our behaviour and characteristics are influenced by our environment.
Culture
A group of people who share similar customs, beliefs and behaviours.
Expectation
The belief we have about what we are going to experience.
Emotion
The moods of feelings that a person experiences.
Motivation
The drives and needs that cause a person to act in a particular way.
