Methods of Training

Interval Training would probably be the best for James. It envolves periods of intense work followed by less intense work periods or rest and is suitable for middle-distance runners.

Advantages:

  • James would not need any specialist equipment
  • It can be adapted to suit any levels of fitness or activity
  • It would allow him to build up his fitness for his five-mile run

Disadvantages:

  • It may be too difficult for James given his lack of fitness and inactive lifestyle

Body Type - Somatotype

As James is only fourteen years old, it is unlikely that he will fall into the category of just one body type. However, maintaining his inactive lifestyle would probably result in him displaying the characteristics of an endomorph.

Endomorph:

  • Wide hips and shoulders
  • High percentage of body fat

A body type ideal for middle-distance running is ectomorph, however this is unrealistic for James to accomplish in the given time frame.
