Giardia

Description: Tear shaped flagellate, sucker like disc for cohesion, infective cysts passed in faeces

Diagnosis: Faecal samples, Microscopic examination

Clincal Signs: Gastroenteritis, D++, Weight loss

Treatment: Panacure (fenbendiazole), faecal samples collected after treatment

Prevention: Good hygiene, PPE with infective patients, discourage from drinking from ponds/ puddles.

Eimeria

Description: found in rabbits (2 species affect caecum, 1 affects bile duct), coccidian

Diagnosis: Finding oocysts present in faeces

Treatment: Administer sulfaquinoxaline in food/ water for 5-7 days, repeat after a week

Prevention: Good hygiene, prompt removal of faeces, disinfection, clean/ dry bedding

Toxoplasma Gondii

Description: Form sarcocysts within host tissues, reproduce sexually in intermediate small intestinal epithelium, zoonotic, Coccidian

Hosts: intermediate- herbivores. final - cats

Clinical signs: none in cats, intermediate: abortion, still birth, flu

Treatment: none

Prevention: Basic hygiene, thorough cooking of meat

Neospora

Description: Form sarcocysts within host tissues, reproduce sexually in intermediate small intestinal epithelium, zoonotic, Coccidian

Hosts: intermediate: cattle, final: dogs

Transmission: Transplacental, raw/ undercooked meat

Clinical Signs: Hindlimb paresis/ paralysis

Diagnosis: ELISA test kit

Treatment: Clindomycin, potential sulphonamides. Poor prognosis for puppies with hindlimb paralysis

Prevention: Good hygiene, prevent drinking from unsafe water sources, clean up faeces, correctly cook meat, correct disposal of dead foetuses
