EPIDURAL

An epidural is an injection given in the lower spine.

It works by blocking the nerves which send the painfull sensations to the brain.

Advantages: Works quickly

blocks out pain

Disadvantages: Only available in hospitals

mother doesnt get urge to push

can increase time of labour

PETHIDINE

It is an injection put deep into the muscle in the leg or bum and it helps relieve pain

advantages: relieves pain

disadvantages: causes drowsiness of baby

takes 20 mins to work

mother has lack of controll

GAS AND AIR

Offered when contractions get really strong. It is a mixture of oxygen and nitrous oxide (entonox).

Its inhaled through a mouthpiece or mask.

advantages: controlled by women

Isnt harmful to baby

disadvantages: the effect wears off quickly

mother may feel sick

pain isnt removed completley

TENS MACHINE

four flat pads containing electrodes which are attached to mothers back.

When mother feels pain she has a hand held controller which sends electrical impulses to her back.

advantages: block pain

has no side affects

disadvantages: only available at hospital

mother cant bath or shower with it on
