P1a - Energy and Temperature

  • Heat is a form of energy and is measured in joules (J)
  • Heat flow is directed by the temperature difference. if there's a temperature difference between two places then energy will flow between them
  • Temperature measures the how hot something is and is measured in ('c)
  • A thermagram is a generated picture that shows the temperature of certain objects and places
  • SHC measures how much heat energy things can hold
  • ENERGY = MASS x SHC x TEMP. CHANGE
  • Energy is being transferred when materials melt or boil although there is no change in temperature
  • SLH is the amount of energy needed to change the state of something
  • ENERGY = MASS x SLH
  • Energy is needed to break intermolecular bonds during changes of state
