Oxidation States

Oxidation states are found in chapter 10 of the Nelson Thornes AQA AS chemistry textbook. We can use oxidation states to help understand Redox reactions.

These are some oxidation states of common elements.

?

Oxidation States

Element = Oxidation State

Hydrogen = +1 (except in metal hyrdrides (NaH) where it equals -1)

Group 1  = +1

Group 2  = +2

Aluminium =  +3

Oxygen = -2 (Except in peroxides = -1 and in compounds with OF2 where it is +2

Flourine = -1

Chlorine = -1 (Except in compounds with F and O where it has a positive value due to F and O being more electornegative
