Phospholipids and cholesterol

Phospholipids

Brief description

  • Has a phosphate head which is hydrophilic
  • 2 fatty acid chains which are hydrophobic
  • Provides a barrier between outside and inside of cell. The barrier is impermeable

Cholesterol

Brief description

  • Important for the stability in strength of membrane
  • The more cholesterol you have the less fluid the membrne will be
  • Provides stability and strength

Proteins, Glycolipids and Glycoproteins

Proteins

  • Intrinsic, extrinsic and transport proteins
  • Allows substances to go through them and into the cell

Glycolipids

  • Phospholipid with carbohydrate chain attached
  • Cell signalling and cell recognition

Glycoproteins

  • Protein with carbohydrate chain attached
  • Cell signalling and cell recognition
