Organic tests

 - burn in air

 - produces a yellow or blue flame

 - greater proportion of carbon yellow flame

 - plenty of air porduces CO  and H O

 - reduced air produces CO and soot (Carbon)

 - solid compounds will char

 - test for C=C bonds

 - add bromine water

 - if bromine water decolourises the compound is unsaturated

 - no change saturated

 - find the mass of each element 

    - Carbon  (12/44)

    - Hydrogen (2/18)

 - find the moles ( no. of moles = mass/relative atomic mass)

 - divide the answers by the smallest one

 - provides the simplest ratio ( empirical formula)
