Ordering Numbers

Putting Numbers in Order of Size

Write these numbers in order, from smallest to largest:

0.531       0.098         0.14         0.0026        0.7         0.007         0.03

1)  These are all between 0 and 1, so group them by the number of 0s as the start:

       2 initial 0s:                                    1 initial 0:                             no initial 0s

   0.0026     0.007                             0.098      0.03                    0.531   0.14   0.7

2) Once they are in groups, just order them by comparing the first non-zero digits.

( If the first digits are the same, look at the next digit along instead)

0.0026     0.007              0.03      0.098             0.14     0.531      0.7

Two Simple Questions

 1) Find 15% of £46

1) Write 15% as a decimal:                                            15% = 15 divided by 100 = 0.15

2) Multiply £46 by 0.15                                                   0.15 x £46 = £ 6.90

2) A toaster is reduced in price by 40% in the sales. It originally cost cost £68. What is the new price of the toaster?

1) Find 40% of £68 ( using the method above):          40% = 40 divided by 100 =0.4

                                                                                     So 40% of 68% = 0.4 x £68 = £27.20

2) It is a decrease, so subtract from the orginal:          So £68 - £27.20= £40.80

3) Give 40p as a percentage of £3.34

1) Make sure both amounts are in the same units - convert £3.34 to pence: £3.34= 334p

2) Divide 40p by 334p, then multiply by 100: (40 divide 334) x 100= 12.0% (to 1 d.p)
