Definition

  • A type of malnutrition
  • People are obese when their body mass index (BMI) is higher than 30

Causes

  • High calorie intake - unused calories are stored in our fat cells
  • Eating too much processed food
  • High alcohol consumption
  • Lack of physical activity
  • Genetics
  • Medical conditions or medication

Symptoms

  • Depression
  • Joint pain
  • High blood pressure
  • Shortness of breath
  • Increased sweating
  • Stretch marks
  • Immobility
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Snoring

Treatments

  • ORLISTAT

Medication that stops the body from absorbing all the fat from food - must be combined with a healthy diet and exercise. Side effects include flatulence, stomach pain

  • BARIATRIC SURGERY

Surgery to reduce size of the stomach so less food is consumed. It is considered for people with a BMI over 40 and it is ony available on the NHS

Management

LIFESTYLE CHOICES

  • Counselling (CBT) to change thought processes
  • Weight Watchers support group
  • Find a hobby that involves being active

DIET

  • Eat 5 a day
  • Avoid salty, fatty foods 
  • Reduce alcohol
  • Reduce processed foods and sugary drinks

EXERCISE

  • Get an exercise partner
  • Wherever possible, walk instead of driving.

Impacts

FINANCIAL

  • Spend money on food, difficult to work so low income, hospital parking fees, gym membership

PHYSICAL

  • Takes longer to get around, sleeping difficulties, more sweating, harder to wash unreachable places, pain

INTELLECTUAL

  • distracted by pain, they learn about how to be healthier

EMOTIONAL

  • low self esteem, may feel lazy, guilty after eating something "unhealthy"

SOCIAL

  • Unable to participate in some activities, may isolate themselves, bullying
