Transverse Waves

The Oscillations in a transverse waves are perpendicular (at right angles) to the direction of energy transfer.

This can be demonstrated by taking a rope or slinky and moving it up and down vertically - the wave then moves horizontally

Remember waves transfer energy NOT matter

Longitudinal Waves

The Oscillations in a longitudinal wave are parallel to the direction of energy transfer.

This can be demonstrated by moving a slinky backwards and forwards horizontally - the waves will also move horizontally
