STRUCTURE OF METALS

All metals are made up of CRYSTALS. Each crystal has a boundary that is firmly bonded to the boundary of neighbouring crystals.

Nature of the crystal depends on the material. For example, steel is made up of iron & carbon so these elements will be seen within the microstructure of materials.

TITANIUM

- Good strength to weight ratio

- Clean material making it suitable for surgical applications such as hip replacements

- High strength, stiffness & toughness

- Low density

USES: Used for alloys. Alloys are used in aerospace industry for airframes & engines where lightweight, strength & ability to withstand extreme temperatures are important.

SILVER

- Best conductor of heat & electricity out of all metals

- Strong, malleable & ductile

- Reflects light very well

USES: Expensive cutlery

ALUMINIUM

- Low density & weight

- Good malleability

- High strength

- Corrosion resistant

- Excellent conductor of heat & electricity

USES: Kitchenware such as saucepans, drinks cans, used in cables when drawn into wires

COPPER

- Soft, malleable, ductile

- Very high thermal & electrical conductivity

- Good resistance to corrosion

USES: Electrical wiring, gas pipes (suitable as it is malleable)

GOLD

- Soft

- Malleable - hammered into thin sheets

- Ductile

- Heavy

USES: Jewellery, electronics, phone SIM cards

ZINC

- Fair conductor of electricity

- Low melting point

- Resistant to corrosion

USES: Half of all zinc produced today is used to galvanise steel to prevent against corrosion. Used to protect buildings, cars, nails, wire & pipes.
