there are 3 types of networks, these are called:
- local area networks (LAN)
- wide area networks(WAN)
- virtual private networks(VPN)
a local area network is a network where everything is located on one site and owned by one organisation. the services can only be accessed from within the LAN. it is possible to make a LAN go over multiple buildings like a school with different buildings on one site.
a wide area network is when a group of LANs are joined, it would usually have internal network hardware but, normally, still be on a public network to connect each seperate branch. they might be as far apart as the opposite side of a country
a virtual private network is a network
